UBC Choirs

University Singers

A choir of approximately 40 mixed voices, this ensemble performs major works of the choral repertoire appropriate to its size. Winner of several awards, including the CBC National Choral Competition and the BBC International Choral Competition, the choir usually tours British Columbia and occasionally further afield, including European tours. This year the University Singers performed at the BC Music Educators Association Conference.

Choral Union

UBC's largest choir, approximately 180 voices, presents concerts of major choral literature from the 16th through the 20th centuries, including the premieres of compositions by student, alumnus and faculty composers. The choir also combines forces with the University Singers and UBC Symphony Orchestra to perform works from the oratorio repertoire.

Vocal Jazz

Vocal Jazz has distinguished itself as one of UBC's premiere a small ensembles. Vocal Jazz performs both classical and popular music from Latin and Rock to spirituals, pop and doo-wop tunes. The group consists of about sixteen singers who are selected by audition as demonstrating great versatility, refined musicianship, and passion for excellence.

Womens' Choir

The UBC Womens' Choir consists of twenty Alto and Soprano member's who perform high-quality renaissance, classical and contemporary pieces. Committed to excellence in the performance of challenging choral literature for women's voices, the UBC Womens' Choir has performed different compositions by many Canadian Composers. The chorus inspires and enriches its audiences through its concert series through out the school year.

Chamber Choir

The UBC Chamber Choir is an intimate choir consisting of sixteen members. The ensemble has performed Renaissance, Classical and Romantic pieces to Contemporary pieces by UBC composition students. The ensemble participates in many choral events through out the year.

U Singers sing for the Olympic torch!

University Singers w/ Mayor Gregor Robertson

The University Singers, showed their Olympic spirit as they performed at the celebration for the Olympic Torch Relay’s arrival in Vancouver, at David Lam Park on February 11.

The University Singers performed Gregory Charles' (CBC Radio host, Canadian composer, and pianist) composition, There’s a Light/Cette flamme and Dr. Graeme Langager's (Director of Choirs, UBC School of Music) arrangement of O Canada, which he wrote for this occasion.

The University Singers also performed for the Cultural Olympiad at the Chan Center on the evening of March 15th.
