The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) is one of three federal agencies that provide research funding for university students, postdoctoral fellows and professors. SSHRC funds research in the social sciences and humanities, including music. SSHRC administers several funding programs for graduate students: Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) for Master’s students ($17,500 per annum for one year); Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) for doctoral students ($35,000 per annum for up to three years); and Doctoral Fellowships ($20,000 per annum for up to four years).
The Faculty of Graduate Studies also offers approximately 220 Affiliated Fellowships each year to meritorious students for full-time study and/or research leading to a graduate degree. Awards are made on the basis of academic excellence, and are open to currently registered, full-time UBC graduate students regardless of citizenship or visa status. Fellowship values range from $300 to $27,500, but most are in the range of $16,000-$17,000. Several of the Affiliated Fellowships have no specific criteria (unrestricted), while many others have some affiliation or special research focus as part of their criteria (criteria-based). All graduate students in the Affiliated Fellowships competition are automatically considered for unrestricted awards. In order to be considered for any criteria-based awards, students are asked to review the list of criteria-based Affiliated Fellowships to determine if they meet any of these awards' criteria, and list in their application the award numbers of any and all criteria-based affiliated awards for which they are eligible.
Application deadline: 4 p.m., September 30th, 2010, at the Student Advisor office (Music Building Rm. 425). Those eligible for SSHRC funding need not submit a separate application for Affiliated Fellowships. Those ineligible for SSHRC funding but wishing to apply for Affiliated Fellowships must fill out an online application that will be available on the Faculty of Graduate Studies’ awards form page: http://www.grad.ubc.ca/forms/?=SAW. Please note that funding from both sources begins in the academic year following the application.
Please note that all Canadian Master’s and Doctoral students are eligible to apply for SSHRC funding. If you are designated as a Four-Year Fellowship (4YF) holder, you must apply for SSHRC funding as a condition of retaining your fellowship, unless you are entering your fourth year of study. SSHRC applicants are automatically considered for Affiliated Fellowships should their SSHRC proposals be unsuccessful; therefore no separate application for Affiliated Fellowships is required.
Traditionally, SSHRC funding is offered to students in academic disciplines; however, funding is also available for students in performance and composition proposing projects requiring scholarly research. Please contact the Graduate Advisor for more information.
All current graduate students, both Canadian and international, are eligible to apply for Affiliated Fellowships. If you are an international doctoral student and hold a Four-Year Fellowship, you must apply for a Affiliated Fellowship in your first year only as a condition of retaining your scholarship.
