SCHOLARSHIPS

To be eligible for ANY UBC scholarship, the student, in the preceding academic year:

must have been a full-time student registered in a minimum of 27 UBC credits, or be a newly admitted student for the current academic year;
must not have failed any courses; and,
must have maintained an average of at least 75%. Newly admitted students must have a 75% average in their last year of full-time study (e.g. high school, college).

A. UBC-Wide & Arts-Wide Scholarships

1) General

There are general academic scholarships, including large entrance scholarships, which are administered directly by the office of Student Financial Assistance & Awards, and for which all UBC students are eligible. Some awards and scholarships at UBC do require an application form or nomination while some do not and applicants are automatically considered.

2) 2nd Year (apply at end of 1st year)

William and Nona Heaslip Scholarship (1/2 way down page): Undergraduate students entering their second year in the Faculty of Arts are eligible to apply for one of two $15,000 scholarships. In selecting recipients, consideration is given to strong academic performance (minimum 75% average), financial need, and community involvement.

3) Upper Level

Premier Undergraduate and Wesbrook Scholarships: recognizes third- and fourth-year students with academic achievement and involvement in sports and community pursuits.
Rhodes Scholarship: For students in their graduating year.

4) Exchange

Arts Travel & Learn Abroad Award for Students (1/2 way down page): awards up to $2,500 each to undergraduate students who have completed at least one year (27 credits) in the Faculty of Arts and who have applied to a Study Abroad Program. In selecting recipients, consideration is given to strong academic performance and demonstrated interest in area of study as outlined in statement of purpose.
UBC Exchange Scholarships: There are a number of scholarships specifically for students going on exchange.
Killam Fellowships Program Awards: Provides exceptional undergraduate students from select universities in Canada and the United States with the opportunity to spend either one semester or a full academic year as an exchange student in the other country.

5) Co-op

Co-op Scholarships: Students participating in Arts Co-op may be eligible to receive scholarships.

B. UBC Music Scholarships

1) No application necessary

There is no special application process for the majority of scholarships in Music. New and returning students in the B.Mus. degree program, and in the various graduate degree programs in Music, are automatically considered for these scholarships.
Many Music scholarships are designated for certain instruments or have other particular requirements; scholarship recipients must also meet the following basic minimum academic requirements stipulated by the Office of Student Financial Assistance and Awards:
There are a number of scholarships specifically designated for full-time students in the UBC School of Music. The School of Music's ability to reward excellence with scholarships has markedly increased in recent years. This year, awards in amounts ranging from $500 to $3,500, were made to over 50 undergraduates. Included among these were several substantial entrance scholarships. C. Non-UBC Music Scholarships

BC Arts Council Scholarship Awards. Deadline to apply: April 30th.
The Mya Domeij Evenden Memorial Fund (for voice students in B.C. who sing in a choir)
Vancouver Women's Musical Society
National Arts Centre Orchestra Bursary Competition - Music students between the ages of 16 and 24 whose family homes or principal residences are in the National Capital Region (Canada) and who are pursuing careers as professional orchestral musicians. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada.
Burt Harris Memorial Scholarship: Music BC Charitable Foundation - $1,000 scholarship award for individuals age 25 and under who can show financial need and exceptional ability, to help pay for tuition for a music program at a post secondary institution. See web site for deadline dates.
Salt Spring Arts Council For students residing in School District 64, graduating from Secondary School, and for graduates from the District pursuing Post-Secondary education.
Victoria Area $300 Award (WSAC): Only for students with a primary residence in the following Victoria, BC suburbs: Colwood, Highlands, Langford, Metchosin or View Royal.

D. General Non-UBC Scholarships

Association of Universities & Colleges of Canada
Coast Capital Savings Education Awards for British Columbian Residents.
Loren Awards: for high school students entering university in their next year. Open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents only. Various EARLY deadline dates.
Mensa Canada Scholarships: for Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
Minstrel Foundation Scholarship: for low income, inner-city students to study music at an advanced level. Application. Contact.
Royal Bank Scholarships for Undergraduates for students entering 2nd to final year of an undergraduate university program. Must be Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident.
