Literature Requirement
The Writing and Research Requirement
The Writing and Research Requirement applies to students who:
- began their studies in BMus in Winter Session 2009/10 or later from secondary school, including those with A-level credit.
- began their studies in BMus in Winter Session 2009/10 or later from college or university with fewer than 7 transfer credits.
- began their studies in BMus in Winter Session 2009/10 or later with a completed degree.
- began their studies in BMus in Winter session 2010/11 from college or university with 53 or fewer transfer credits
- began their studies in BMus in Winter 2011/12 or later
If this requirement does not apply to you, you must complete the First Year English Requirement.
The English Requirement

The First Year English Requirement applies to students who:
- began their studies in BMus before Winter Session 2009.
- transferred into BMus from college/university or another UBC faculty with more than 6 credits in Winter Session 2009.
- began their studies in BMus from college/university or another UBC faculty with more than 53 credits in Winter Session 2010.
- If this applies to you, you must complete 6 credits of first year English with the first 60 credits
- Once you have commenced your BMUS program at UBC, any required English credits MUST be completed at UBC.
- To prepare for first-year English classes or if you are returning to university and wish to refresh your writing skills, a non-credit course, Writing 099: Advanced Composition may be taken through the UBC Writing Centre. Click here for schedule, registration and fee details.

The Literature Requirement
- All BMUS students must complete 6 credits of Literature prior to graduation.
- Eligible courses are in many subject areas.
- GERM 402: Words and Music in German Literature (if offered) is popular for BMUS students.
