B.MUS. in GENERAL STUDIES: SECONDARY Education Stream

Required coursework

  • Recommended 1st & 2nd year coursework by year of study. Coursework for the first two years of this Elementary Education Stream specialization is identical to the General Studies specialization except that in second year students must also take either MUSC 112 and MUSC 122 (offered on alterate years). Hint: Be sure to read fine print notes at bottom of page.
  • Recommended 3rd & 4th year coursework by year of study. Hint: Be sure to read fine print notes at bottom of page.
  • Advising worksheet:
    a) GS: Secondary - 2009W & beyond program entry (PDF format)
    b) GS: Secondary - 2007W & 2008W program entry  (PDF format)

Helpful hints

  • MUSC 112 and MUSC 122. Must take one of these during second year and the other third year (courses offered alternate years)
  • Secondary Instrument: Due to the importance of secondary instrument expertise when teaching in secondary schools, it is not possible for GSSM majors to test-out/have waived any secondary instrument credits:
    1. GSSM majors not concentrating in piano or voice require 2 years of secondary piano, 1 year of class voice and 1 year of further secondary study on any instrument/voice on which they have prior experience (e.g. voice, piano, other).
    2. GSSM voice concentrators require 2 years of secondary piano and 2 years of further secondary study on any instrument/voice on which they have prior experience (e.g. piano).
    3. GSSM piano concentrators must take at least 1 year of class voice, and take 3 years of further secondary study in voice or on another instrument on which they have prior experience.
  • Large Ensemble: For orchestral instrument concentrators, one large ensemble, in the four years, must be a choir (153 or 154), and the remaining three will be Large Instrumental Ensemble (150).

Steps to Self-advising -- For information only. Not to replace official advising sessions.

  1. a) First-year students with NO transfer credits: Review the first-year General Studies advising page(Remember: Coursework for the first two years of this Elementary Education Stream specialization is identical to the General Studies specialization except that in second year you must also take either MUSC 112 or 122.) Review the registration page for instructions on how to register for courses and to find out when your registration opens.

    b) All other students: Review the recommended 1st & 2nd year (remember, you must also take either MUSC 112 or 122 during second year) or 3rd & 4th year coursework by year of study and check that you have met the degree requirements for the previous year(s) of study:
If you have, you may clearly see what your next year of courses should be; but,
If you have not, you will need to account for the missing coursework, as you plan your future years of B.Mus. study.
For those students with transfer credits, be sure to take them into account. If you are unsure how your credits transfer to your B.Mus. degree, contact the Music Student Advisor.
  2. Concert Attendance Requirement (Wednesday Noon Hour). If you are in 1st or 2nd year, review this requirement.

  3. Language Proficiency Index (LPI). Have you passed (or are you exempt from) the LPI? If not, review the requirements.

  4. English. Have you completed six credits of first-year English? If not, review the requirements.

  7. Music Education. Do you have an interest in becoming an elementary or secondary school teacher? If so: review Music EducationNote: In order to be eligible for entrance into the B.Ed. program, all composition majors must meet the B.Ed. pre-requisite requirements, even if such coursework is not a required part of your B.Mus. degree.
  8. Review the Additional Resources for other advising items of interest (e.g., registration drop/add dates; scholarships).

  9. Graduation course requirement checks, for third (3rd) and fourth (4th) year students only, are sent by e-mail from the Music Student Advisor in November.
