The School of Music is committed to a comprehensive approach to the study of traditional and contemporary Western art music, plus opportunities are also provided for students to study the music of other cultures, film music, jazz and electroacoustic music. Undergraduate programs are subject to regular review to update, enrich and streamline their content. Career opportunities include public school education, private teaching, college or university teaching, performance (orchestral, ensemble, opera and solo), and such other vocations as composition (commercial and non-commercial), music criticism, broadcasting and recording, music publishing, librarianship and arts management. Graduates of the School of Music have been successful in gaining admission to competitive graduate programs throughout North America.
The School of Music - Bachelor of Music (B.Mus.)
The School of Music admits undergraduate students to specific majors in the Bachelor of Music (B.Mus.). Every major includes four years of private instruction in an instrument or voice. Admission is based on an audition, an entrance examination in music theory, and grade point average. Students must also meet the minimum academic requirements for admission to the University (described below).
The Faculty of Arts - Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree with a Major, Minor, or Honours in Music
The Faculty of Arts offers other degree programs in Music for students who do not meet the special admissions requirements of the School of Music. The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree with a Major, Minor, or Honours in Music includes core music courses similar to the B.Mus. degrees, but does not include private instrumental or vocal instruction.
