1.  String Division

  • Sessional Lecturer Guitar -- Daniel Bolshoy
    Daniel Bolshoy is one of the leading performers of his generation in Canada and a leading guitarist in North America. He is regularly praised for his friendly and informative spoken introductions, and progressive programming of solo and chamber music. He is committed to bringing the guitar to the attention of audiences everywhere, from prestigious international concert stages to remote villages and house-concerts.

    Mr. Bolshoy has performed for many prestigious festivals in North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. He has performed hundreds of solo and chamber music recitals internationally, and has appeared as soloist with numerous orchestras in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Russia and Israel.

    He is frequently invited to participate in international music festivals and competitions, as performer, teacher and adjudicator. Recent festivals include the Guitar-Gems festival in Israel, the Tabula Rasa festival in Russia, and the National Finals of the Canadian Federation of Music Festivals among many others.

    Daniel Bolshoy’s recitals are frequently broadcast on CBC Radio, and he has also appeared in two documentary films for the Bravo! (TV) series: The Classical Now. He has recorded seven solo and ensemble CDs, his most recent recording features the music of Eduardo Sainz de la Maza on the ATMA Classique label.

    Daniel Bolshoy studied with Ricardo Iznaola at the University of Denver where he received his Master’s degree, and with Eli Kassner and Norbert Kraft at the University of Toronto before that. He pursued Doctoral studies with Ernesto Bitetti at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.

    Daniel Bolshoy is the head of the guitar division at the University of British Columbia School of Music, and the head of the guitar department at the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra School of Music.

  • Audition Requirements: Three contrasting pieces from different periods of the repertoire.
  • Include a repertoire list and selection of programs from other recitals given.
  • Submit a term paper, if available, or a written statement of professional goals.
