Master of Music Master of Arts Doctor of Musical Arts Doctor of Philosophy
The School of Music offers graduate programs and degrees in three broad fields of specialization: performance, composition, and music scholarship. The Master of Music (M.Mus.) and Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) are offered in performance and composition; the Master of Arts (M.A.) and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Music with emphases on Music Theory, Historical Musicology, and Ethnomusicology.
Graduate Studies in music at the University of British Columbia provide a stimulating atmosphere in which to pursue research. The faculty encourages students to explore a full range of scholarly approaches, from recent critical and theoretical initiatives to traditional analytical and historical methodologies. Students are also invited to cross disciplinary lines both within the School and the University. Past and current graduate students have explored a broad range of topics in such areas as European concert music, popular music, jazz, Canadian music, Balinese gamelan, folk music, American music, Chinese music, and First Nations traditions.
