Diploma in Collaborative Piano Studies (DPST)

The School of Music offers a two year Diploma in Collaborative Piano Studies. The unique demands of collaborative work with singers and instrumentalists require specialized training for pianists. The Diploma program combines repertoire study with a diverse array of courses designed to enhance specific skills, in preparation for, or in place of, graduate degree work in collaborative piano. Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree, normally in piano performance, including several years of experience in collaborative work, in both vocal and chamber music, and with very strong proficiency in sight reading. Some study of German and of French or Italian is recommended.

Sample course description: Opera Coaching 443

Opera Coaching 443 is a two year course in opera for pianists within the Collaborative Studies Diploma. How does a young pianist become an opera rehearsal pianist, a vocal coach, or an opera conductor? What is the difference between a coach and a collaborative concert pianist? How are young pianists hired by professional opera companies? Designed for pianists who want to work and perform in the field of opera, Opera Coaching 443 offers a weekly 90 minute class and private coaching sessions with the instructor - conductor, pianist and composer, Leslie Uyeda. Through the study of operatic repertoire, pianists learn how to play opera on the piano. Students learn to prepare scores, how to coach and work with singers, and to prepare and play auditions. Participants are encouraged to attend rehearsals at Vancouver Opera, where Leslie Uyeda is Chorus Director. This course also offers an introduction to the basics of conducting opera, and includes discussion of the business of opera.
