"I think that if I were required to spend the rest of my life on a desert island, and to listen to or play the music of any one composer during all that time, that composer would almost certainly be Bach. I really can't think of any other music which is so all-encompassing, which moves me so deeply and so consistently, and which, to use a rather imprecise word, is valuable beyond all of its skill and brilliance for something more meaningful than that - its humanity. ~ Glenn Gould

“Beyond the Screen” disability and the Arts”
a series of events exploring barriers in music and the arts.
In many orchestras and ensembles, musicians audition from behind a screen to prevent discrimination on the basis of gender, race, or disability. How do prejudices about disabled musicians affect their reception and chances for success? How can we re-imagine the teaching of music in ways that account for different approaches to learning and performance? What are the responsibilities of the university when it comes to students with different learning needs? Events include including film, debate, lecture/concert, workshop, roundtable conversation with the signature event being a piano recital by Nobuyuki Tsujii.

UBC Music Graduate Colloquium Series - "Opera from a Distance"
Talk by Dr. Sherry Lee, a UBC graduate and Associate Professor of History and Culture at the University of Toronto
Theodor Adorno’s favourite seat in the opera house was, apparently, in the middle of the front row in the upper circle. An avid operagoer, he preferred this somewhat obscure location especially for its acoustic advantages for attentive listening, despite – or, rather, partly because of – the imperfect view it afforded of the faraway stage. According to Adorno, opera after Wagner had fallen into a kind of chasm somewhere between writing and representation, between score and stage. Yet in the score of Wagner's Parsifal, he located a demand for a unique art of listening, one that encompassed the auditory and the spatial, the sonic and the visual. In this paper's exploration of the function of operatic space, the dimly-lit region between score and stage, Wagner’s final music drama turns out to form a fine vantage point for contemplating opera at the edge of the abyss.

“Beyond the Screen” disability and the Arts” - a series of events exploring barriers in music and the arts.
Events include including film, debate, lecture/concert, workshop, roundtable conversation with the signature event being a piano recital by Nobuyuki Tsujii (presented in cooperation with the UBC School of Music. Co-sponsored by UBC Access and Diversity).

Turning Point Ensemble
Barbara Pentland's THE LAKE: The Live Premiere of a Unique and Compelling Canadian Chamber Opera
1873: ON A STRANGELY STORMY DAY, Susan Allison peers out over Lake Okanagan, anxiously searching the waters for the boat which her husband, John, and their Métis guide, Johnny MacDougall, have taken to deliver flour for grinding at the grist mill in Okanagan Mission. As the winds whip the trees and waves, and her aboriginal child-nurse, Marie, urges her to come indoors, Susan spies a long, undulating figure in the water, “like a huge tree trunk …. moving fast.” Is it N’ha-a-itk, the fearful monster of the Lake? And what has become of John and MacDougall?
Astrolabe Musik Theatre is proud to collaborate with the Turning Point Ensemble in celebrating outstanding Canadian composer Barbara Pentland’s centenary with a live, professional premiere (60 years after its composition) of her 1952 one-act opera The Lake, with libretto by trailblazing Canadian poet Dorothy Livesay. Performed in a semi-staged version, The Lake is directed by James Fagan Tait, conducted by Owen Underhill, and features soprano Heather Pawsey as Susan Allison; bass-baritone Angus Bell as John Allison; mezzo-soprano Barbara Towell as Marie; and tenor John Arsenault as Johnny MacDougall.
Rounding out the program is music by one of Pentland’s teachers, Aaron Copland. Two of his early chamber works – Sextet for clarinet, piano and string quartet (1937) and Vitebsk (Study on a Jewish Theme – 1929) are paired with the premiere of a new sextet, Ascendant, dedicated to the memory of Aaron Copland by New York composer and Grammy-nominated jazz musician Dave Douglas.

Boulez Contra Cage
8pm, Western Front, 303 East 8th Avenue
Adapted by Vancouver playwright David Bloom from the published correspondence, writings and public statements of Pierre Boulez and John Cage, Boulez Contra Cage dramatizes their relationship – the friendship, conflict and schism of two major Queer composers who embody the polar opposites of post-war musical thought: the resolute structure of Serialism, and the radical spontaneity of Indeterminacy. The drama features actors David Bloom and Simon Webb, flute/piano duo Tiresias comprised of Mark McGregor and Rachel Kiyo Iwaasa, and projections by Michael Sider.
