March 5, 2012

“Musicians have done better. With voices and huge orchestras – or possibly with a string quartet – they have aroused greater depth of feeling than most writers can hope to do. Wagner, to name but one, has done it with shattering impact. But even Wagner, with his magnificent music . . .is never wholly successful. Why? Because a work of art must be, in some measure, coherent; but thought and feeling mingled, as all of us experience them, are surging and incoherent.” ~ Robertson Davies, from Murther & Walking Spirits

For you this week. Enjoy! . . . .

Winners of the 2012 UBC Concerto Competition held this past weekend
The competition this year was coordinated by Professor Roelof Oostwoud.
1st place went to percussionist Jeremy Lawi. He wowed the audience and judges with his bravura and virtuosic performance of the Percussion Concerto by the American composer Jennifer Higdon (1962 - ).
2nd place (1st runner-up) was Natalie Lo, who gave a wonderfully sensitive (beautiful touch and lovely phrasing) and romantic performance of the Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1in E minor.
3rd place (2nd runner-up) was Hillary Young. Her Knoxville Summer of 1915, Op. 24 by Samuel Barber was sung with a beautiful tone, aptly capturing the nostalgic and dreamlike mood of this lovely work.
Congratulations to all finalists of the competition!

Dodson Music Series - Entartete Musik
“Entartete Musik” was a term used by the Nazis to defame atonal music, jazz, and works by Jewish composers as “degenerate”. The targeted composers included Schoenberg, Webern, Hindemith, Stravinsky, Weill, Goldschmidt, and Waxman.  Many of them emigrated to the United States, and some had illustrious careers as film music composers in Hollywood. Students of the UBC School of Music will present a varied programme of vocal and instrumental music by Messiaen, Zemlinsky, and Schulhoff.  They will offer a view into the musical world of Weimar Germany, and the artistry in defiance of oppression that was the musical world of Nazi concentration camps. The concert series is directed by Leah Giselle Field.
