The Merry Widow has enjoyed extraordinary international success since its 1905 premiere in Vienna and continues to be an audience favourite. In addition to being continuously performed on stages all over the world, there have also been several successful filmed versions of the operetta.
At a high-society party in turn-of-the-century Paris, potential suitors await the arrival of Hanna Glawari, the frisky tempestuous Pontevedrian widow of an outrageously wealthy man. However, trouble is afoot when the Pontevedrian Ambassador and embassy staff receive a royal edict warning them that should Hanna marry a foreigner, their tiny country of Pontevedro will go bankrupt. What unfolds is an embassy plot to match and marry her off to her country’s most eligible bachelor, the handsome Count Danilo Danilovitch with whom she was once engaged. Although they still love each other, Danilo refuses to court Hanna solely because of her fortune and Hanna vows she will not marry him until he says “I love you”. What follows is a hilarious chain of events that will captivate, dazzle, and entertain!
Lehár, known for his magnificent Viennese waltzes, does not disappoint in this beautifully scored operetta as audience members are swept away by the memorable melodies and heartfelt orchestrations. Included is the beloved and famous aria, “Vilja Lied” as well as the boisterous and comically pleasing “Da geh’ ich zu Maxim” (“You’ll Find Me at Maxim’s”). The clever writing and brilliant music truly make The Merry Widow one of the best-known operettas.
UBC’s production of The Merry Widow features a stunning set as well as brilliant lighting design by Vancouver lighting designer, Jeremy Baxter. Stage director, Nancy Hermiston is joined by Italian choreographer Roberta Baseggio to make the opera come to life as the UBC Opera Ensemble sings, acts, and gracefully waltzes across the stage in show-stopping numbers. The UBC Opera Ensemble and members of the UBC Symphony Orchestra are led under the baton of Richard Epp. Together this team creates the hilarious, can-canning, rip-roaring spectacle on stage at the historic Old Auditorium.
The Merry Widow was last performed at UBC in 2002, and UBC Alum, Rhoslyn Jones, played the title role of Hanna Glawari. She has since gone on to play the role of The Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro, with Vancouver Opera, and can be seen in many other main-stage productions throughout North America. The Merry Widow is indeed not a stranger to some of the world’s most famous opera singers as its music has been sung by opera greats such as Placido Domingo and Renée Fleming.
The talented singers from the UBC Opera Ensemble have come together from all parts of Canada and the world to prepare this masterpiece for the Vancouver public. All roles are double cast. Ember Lanuti and Shadan Saul share the role of Hanna Glawari, the wealthy widow. Alan Macdonald and Aaron Durand play the dashing Count Danilo Danilovitch. Tony Caruso and Sunny Shams portray Camille Rosillon, the handsome French lover of the love-struck Valencienne, played by Stephanie Domingues and Claire McLaughlin.
These opera performances are made possible through the generous assistance of the David Spencer Endowment Fund at UBC.
UBC Opera brings to life the magic, fun, twists, turns and sheer delight of this Lehár masterpiece to the stage of the UBC Old Auditorium, June 21-24, 2012.
