"Piano virtuosity can take a variety of forms, but one of the rarest belongs to John O'Conor ... [he] represents a vanishing tradition that favors inner expression and atmosphere over showmanship and bravura ... in technically complex passages he goes the extra measure to find the ideas behind the flurry of notes." Robert Ward The Crucible at the Old Auditorium
A classic of American literature.
Robert Ward’s retelling of The Crucible, based on Arthur Miller’s searing play about the 1692 Salem witch trails, is a study of ordinary people thrown into extraordinary circumstances. Ward's musical setting of The Crucible only increases the intensity in this powerful depiction of the strength required to maintain hope in the face of overwhelming injustice. The Crucible, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, remains a parable for our times and its powerful message and passionate music makes it more than an American classic - it’s an operatic masterpiece.
February 9 - 12
Anton Dvořák Rusalka at the Chan Centre
A classic European fairytale.
Rusalka tells of the story of The Little Mermaid who gives her voice to a wicked witch for a chance at human love with a mortal Prince. Her desperate longing to experience true love plunges her into an emotional storm. She must choose to make the ultimate sacrifice for love. Romantic, ethereal, and hauntingly sad, Dvořák's dramatic music soars with melody, romance, and longing. Rusalka is not only Dvořák's finest and most enduringly popular opera but also one of the most deeply moving operas of all.
June 21 – 24
Franz Lehar The Merry Widow at the Old Auditorium
A classic of the opera stage.
At a high-society party in turn-of-the-century Paris, potential suitors await the arrival of Anna Glawari, the frisky tempestuous widow of an outrageously wealthy man in search of true love. But, she faces a tough decision: If she decides to marry only for love, her tiny country will be left bankrupt! What unfolds is an embassy plot to match and marry her off to her country’s most eligible bachelor, handsome Count Danilo. Anna, adamant on finding true love, tests Danilo’s heart. Lovers' crazy trysts, lavish parties, spirited hijinks and political intrigue ensue and makes this joyful operetta one not to be missed.
