The School of Music at the University of British Columbia intends to hire a staff Piano Tuner Technician. Initially, this appointment will be at 80% (30 hours per week), and will include all appropriate benefits.
Positions in this classification perform at an advanced level specialized tuning, scheduled and preventative maintenance, and repairs of pianos and related equipment, and provide consultative services for new equipment selection as requested.
Typical Duties:
Guided by outlines and procedures, and by priorities determined by faculty and administrative staff, undertakes assignments that require application of all aspects of piano tuning, adjustment, voicing, and regulation.
Plans and maintains a schedule of tuning, regulation, voicing, and maintenance for a large number of pianos in the School of Music, meeting the high degree of precision needed for professional teaching, practice and concert performance.
Performs maintenance and repair work, including parts replacement and overhauls, on all pianos and similar musical equipment, commensurate with the tools and space provided by the University.
Selects, assesses and orders parts, and other required materials, tools and equipment, and maintains an adequate inventory, working within stipulated budget allocations.
Provides consultative services to faculty with respect to feasibility and/or alternatives in the selection of pianos and related musical equipment, as requested.
Carries out other related duties as required, in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.
May be required to work with another Piano Tuner Technician.
Decision Making/Accountability:
Determines the sequence of work and makes technical decisions related to the tuning and repair of pianos in accordance with accepted standards of practice and relevant departmental guidelines and policies; inappropriate repair/maintenance decisions could damage instruments or delay resolution of problems and adversely affect users.
Supervision Received:
Works independently under general direction, in accordance with priorities and budgets set by faculty in the Keyboard Division and by the Director of the School of Music. Consults with the faculty in the Keyboard Division and with the Director before embarking on major repair or maintenance projects beyond routine tuning, voicing, and regulation. Keeps major studio and concert instruments adjusted according to preferences and standards indicated by members of the Keyboard Division.
Supervision Exercised:
May be required to work with others or coordinate the work of others as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation plus completion of a Piano Tuning course supplemented by courses in music and a minimum five years’ of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Thorough knowledge of best practices, methods, and materials of professional piano maintenance, for all major piano types and makes. Refined aural discrimination and awareness of technical and artistic standards at the professional concert level.
