Professor Berinbaum retired from the full time faculty in 2008 after 32 years of service to the University and the music culture of British Columbia.

Professor Berinbaum was born in Philadelphia but spent his first 18 years in Bakersfield, California.  He graduated from the University of Southern California in 1969, and after a world tour with the famous Roger Wagner Chorale and Orchestra he joined the outstanding  military band at the West Point Military Academy in 1969.  He began his Masters degree studies at the Julliard School in New York City in 1972 and graduated in 1974.

While at Julliard  he studied with William Vachiano, and Robert Nagel and many other notable trumpet professionals.

In 1974 Mr. Berinbaum performed two very successful debut concerts at the Carnegie Recital Hall in New York City that launched his career as a trumpet soloist.  In NYC Martin worked with the well known conductor Johannes Somary, and he and Maestro Somary collaborated in a landmark recording with the English Chamber Orchestra of the Haydn and Hummel concertos for Vanguard Records which won high praise from critics and was selected to be one of 500 albums in the “President’s Collection” at the White House by High Fidelity Magazine.

He has performed with over 100 orchestras and bands around the world including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Kiev Symphony, National Arts Center Orchestra, and the Vancouver Symphony.  He toured and recorded extensively with the trumpet and organ duo Toccatas and Flourishes  playing over 850 concerts in North America.  One of Toccatas and Flourishes’ earliest concerts was at the Kennedy Center for the inauguration of President Jimmy Carter.  Martin has recorded for Columbia, and RCA, the CBC, Klavier and Vanguard Records.  He performed on the NBC Today show three times.  He has performed in England, Europe, China, New Zealand, Australia, the United States as well as across Canada.

Berinbaum was appointed Director of Bands and Professor of Trumpet at UBC in 1976.  Since being part of the UBC Faculty of Music, the Wind Ensemble has performed over 200 concerts at UBC. He conducted the group at the Western Division of the College Band Director National Association conventions in the US, and in New York City and inTaiwan and Hong Kong.  The group annually toured in British Columbia playing at dozens of schools, community centers, and care facilities for thousands of listeners.  In 1993 Professor Berinbaum initiated the UBC Summer Music Institute which has to date brought over 3000 instrumental and voice students to the campus in July of each year.
