David Metzer has explored a range of twentieth-century styles, including classical, jazz, and pop.  He is currently working on a book dealing with directions taken in modernist music during the last decades of the century.

Dr. Metzer's publications include Quotation and Cultural Meaning in Twentieth-Century Music (Cambridge University Press, 2003) and articles in Modernism/Modernity, JAMS, and Black Music Reserach Journal.
