2011 Knigge Music Competition: Piano

Winners Announcement!

The UBC School of Music is pleased to announce the winners for the 2011 Knigge Music Competition in Piano held at UBC on Saturday February 26, 2011:

First Prize        Alexander Malikov Canadian from Alta., studying in Oberlin
Second Prize   Connie Kim-Sheng American, studying in Toronto
Third Prize      Rudin Lengo Canadian from Ont., studying in New York
Fourth Prize    Katsiaryna Khatsko Belarussian, studying in Toronto

First Prize winner Alexander Malikov, has been the Second Prize winner at the Knigge for the previous two years. Alexander also won the prize for Best Performance of the Required Work (selections from Preludes Book 1 by Howard Bashaw), which he also won last year at the Knigge Music Competition. A native of Volgograd, Russia Alexander started his piano studies at the age of seven and at age ten immigrated to Canada (Calgary, Alberta) with his family and continued his studies with Dmitry Nesterov. Alexander is currently studying piano with Angela Cheng in the Bachelor of Music program at the Oberlin Conservatory. 

"I attended part of the program on Saturday, and returned for the Winners Concert, on Sunday. Enjoyed it immensely. It was a treat to experience such remarkable talent in the intimate surrounding of the Roy Barnett Recital Hall."

The Knigge Music Competition: 2011 Piano

The annual Knigge Music Competition is graciously supported by a generous gift from Dieter and Hanne-Lore Knigge. The competition is for solo piano and open to pianists ages 16 - 25 who are Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or who are currently studying full-time at a Canadian educational institution at the time of application.

February 26–27, 2011 | UBC Recital Hall

Competition: Saturday, February 26 ~ 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
(Winners announced approx. 6:30 p.m.)
Winners Concert: Sunday, February 27 ~ 2:00 p.m.

All events are FREE and open to the public.

The Prizes:

First Prize: $5,000 cash plus a solo recital on the UBC School of Music 2010 -2011 Concert Series (with artist fee and accommodation).
Second Prize: $3,000 cash
Third Prize: $1,500 cash
Fourth Prize: $1,000 cash

In addition, there will be a cash prize for Best Performance of the Imposed Work, and up to $7,000 in prizes or scholarships available.
