The UBC School of Music is host to several ensembles-in-residence. The ensembles, associated to the School through leaders or members of the ensembles on faculty, are all prominent performance ensembles in Vancouver. The connection with the School provides the ensembles with facilities and equipment for rehearsal.

The Borealis String Quartet was formed in September 2000 as the ensemble for a professional quartet training program under the guidance of faculty member Andrew Dawes. Initial funding and continued support was provied by the UBC President's Office, Faculty or Arts and School of Music with early additional support from Green College to enable them to live on campus. Over the years of the program, the Borealis String Quartet achieved national and international successes with audiences. They now perform in several countries each year, established a strong connection in Taiwan, and have New York representation. The residency officially completed in 2010 with the Borealis String Quartet remaining connected with the School into the following season presenting their own series of concerts on campus.
